The technology that converts written text into spoken audio, giving AI voice agents a human-sounding voice to respond to callers.

Technical definition

Modern TTS systems use neural network models that generate audio waveforms from text input. Unlike older concatenative or formant-based systems, neural TTS produces natural-sounding speech with appropriate prosody (rhythm, stress, and intonation). Streaming TTS begins generating audio before the full text is available, reducing perceived latency in conversational applications.

How Verabase uses Text-to-Speech

Verabase uses Deepgram Aura voices for text-to-speech, available via your Deepgram API key. After the AI agent generates a text response through the RAG pipeline, the response is converted to speech using your selected voice (Asteria, Stella, or Orion). Audio is streamed back to the caller's browser via WebRTC with low latency. You can select the voice per agent under Agent Settings → Voice → TTS Voice.
